Polyether versus Polyester Foams

Reticulated foams come in two main types, polyester and polyether.

Reticulated polyester foams: These foams have excellent filtration properties. They are perfect in applications where the filter comes in contact with gases such as carbon dioxide, oxygen, and nitrogen. Polyester foam has a consistent cell structure. It can be compressed into sheets of desired thickness and is durable and shock absorbent. When manufactured with additives, it can be flame retardant, anti-static, conductive, and even more.

Reticulated polyether foams: These foams offer excellent performances in moist environments due to their looser structure. They are often used for filtering air, liquid, and sound. Among other things, polyether foam has excellent water, moisture and mold resistance, superior solvency characteristics and strong resistance to degradation. This type of foam is perfect for applications such as humidifiers, medical devices, water purification systems, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Pore per Inch (PPI) options are available, and how do they impact performance?

ID Group offers reticulated filter foams from 10 up to 90 PPI. Lower PPI values mean larger pores and higher airflow, while higher PPIs have smaller pores, but can improve fine particle capture.

What are the main material types of reticulated filter foams and when should each be used?

  • Polyester foams: Durable, shock absorbent, and excellent for gas filtration (e.g., CO₂, O₂), especially when flame-retardant or anti-static additives are needed.
  • Polyether foams: Better suited for moist environments, offering superior water, moisture, and mold resistance, with applications in humidifiers, water purification, and medical devices.

Which industries or applications benefit most from our reticulated filter foams?

Our foams are ideal for harsh-environment air filters. Typical use cases include HVAC systems, outdoor enclosures, mass transportation, heavy-duty trucks, buses and off-highway equipment.

How are custom sizes and forms handled?

We can supply reticulated foams as sheets or die-cut to your specifications. We also offer custom cut solutions, including standard die cutting and laser die cutting, depending on tolerance and material choice.

Can the foam handle temperature changes?

Polyester foam works in higher temperatures than polyether, but both handle normal HVAC and equipment ranges without degrading.

How does ID Group differentiate its reticulated filter foam offering?

  • Assortment: We have access to several filtration foam options across multiple PPI ranges and foam types
  • Customization: We can provide custom die-cut reticulated filter foam parts to fit your exact dimensions, shape and requirements.
  • Flammability: We provide UL900 class 2 filters, a standard widely used in HVAC systems in commercial and residential buildings.
  • Support: ID Group provides expert guidance to help select the right material characteristics for your specific needs.

How do I request a quote or get assistance with material selection?

Talk to our experts about your project. Our team will assist you with selecting the appropriate reticulated foam based on temperature, PPI, density, and flammability to meet your performance, safety, and environmental exposure requirements.
